Met Éireann has issued further weather warnings this evening and it looks like there could be snow on the way. Snowfall is expected on high ground in parts of Donegal over the next 24 hours and there is also a snow and ice warning in Connacht, Longford, Westmeath, Cavan and Monaghan. The Met Éireann website has forecast the following: 'Cold later tonight, with frost and icy patches forming and sleet and snow showers will follow in from the Atlantic also. Lowest temperatures -1 to plus 2 C.' The cold spell looks set to continue tomorrow with showers of hail, sleet and snow predicted, according to the national forecaster: 'Some of the showers will be heavy, with some moderate accumulations of snow, especially on higher ground. Some isolated thunderstorms are expected also. Feeling very cold, in a strong and gusty westerly wind. Not only that, we might have to contend with stormy conditions later on in the week. The National Directorate for Fire and Emergency Management has issued a statement saying: “Met Éireann has advised that the current threat of stormy weather from Wednesday onwards remains in place and the rainfall will serve to top up the already near capacity of our rivers and still poses a major risk,” it said in a statement. “This risk is heightened in slow moving rivers and particularly the Shannon. “The Barrow, Nore, Suir, Slaney, Lee, and Blackwater are also at very high levels and any additional rain can cause serious flooding.”
