The couple had remained in Amsterdam on holiday while their children had set off with their grandfather back to Australia.
Following such a devastating loss, the BBC report two years later the couple have welcomed a baby daughter who has been named Violet, describing her birth as a 'gift'.
"We still live with pain, but Violet, and the knowledge that all four kids are with us always brings light to our darkness. As Martin Luther King said, 'Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that'". "We will continue to love all four of our children equally. Violet brings some hope and joy for us. We hope she brings hope and joy for you too."Eighty children were on board flight MH17 when it was hit by a Russian-made missile, and blame for the incident has gone back and forth from Russian authorities to Ukrainian forces.
