The school teacher was murdered in a brutal attack on the banks of the Grand Canal near Tullamore in Co. Offaly on January 12th, 2022, at just 23 years of age.

As the second anniversary of her death approaches, the Ashling Murphy Memorial Fund has expressed gratitude for those who have supported their mission to honour her memory.

"As the year, 2023, has drawn to a close and a new year begins, we would like to reflect on the year that’s past and look forward to the one to come," the social media account for the trust fund wrote.

Last year, 33-year-old Jozed Puska was found guilty of her murder on November 9th and was sentenced to life imprisonment the following week.

The memorial fund added that 2023 was a 'significantly difficult' year for Ashling's loved ones.

"Although 2023 was a significantly difficult year for the family and friends of Ashling, we are incredibly grateful to everyone who supported the Ashling Murphy Memorial Fund.

"We thank all who donated, undertook a fundraiser, promoted the fund, sent messages of support etc. Your support has not gone unnoticed.”

In their touching tribute to the late school teacher, they remembered Ashling and say their goal is to keep her memory alive.

"Ashling touched the hearts and minds of many people worldwide during her short life and even after her tragic departure from us almost two years ago.

"As we anticipate 2024, we want to continue to ensure Ashling’s name, legacy and memory continues to live on everyday. Our wish is that Ashling will always be remembered for the truly admirable and inspiring lady she was.

The Ashling Murphy Memorial Fund concluded by sharing their appreciation for any future support they are to receive in continuing this wish through donations, fundraising, and applications for funding that 'align with the objectives of the memorial fund’. 

One of the main objectives of the fund is to further the enhancement, development, and advancement of traditional Irish arts, culture, and heritage for young people, in a touching nod to the late 23-year-old, who was an incredibly talented musician.
