They believe his phone may contain material "relevant to the investigation".
Alec Baldwin has handed his mobile phone to authorities as they investigate the
fatal shooting of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins on the Rust movie set.
It comes almost one month after a warrant was issued for the device.
Police are currently investigating why live ammunition was on set and requested Baldwin's phone in mid-December.
They believe that the phone may contain material and evidence that could be "relevant to this investigation".
His iPhone was turned over to law enforcement at his home in Suffolk County, New York.
Investigators want to examine text messages and emails sent between Baldwin, a producer and an actor from the film.
The movie's director of photography, Halyna Hutchins, was killed when Baldwin discharged the prop gun on set in New Mexico on 21 October.
Baldwin says he did not know the gun was loaded before the fatal shooting.
A
lawsuit against the actor alleges that the film script did not require him to ever fire the gun.
Baldwin recently posted a video to Instagram saying that rumours he was refusing to co-operate with police during their investigation were lies.
In a
recent interview with ABC News, he opened up about the tragic event for the first time.
"Even now, I find it hard to believe that," he said. "It doesn't seem real to me."
"Someone put a live bullet in a gun. A bullet that wasn't even supposed to be on the property.
I feel that someone is responsible for what happened and I can’t say who that is. But I know it’s not me.
“I mean, I honest to God, if I felt that I was responsible, I might have killed myself."
He continued:"I don't know what happened on that set. I don't know how that bullet arrived in that gun. I don't know.
"But I'm all for doing anything that will take us to a place where this is less likely to happen again."
