Aer Lingus has issued an apology following the cancellation of multiple flights at Dublin Airport on Sunday (26 June). The airline pointed to "system pressures" after 13 flights to and from the capital were shelved due to industrial strikes and Covid-related staff disruptions. Air traffic control strikes took place, while Aer Lingus noted that there was a "spike" in Covid cases among its personnel. "Aer Lingus anticipated the return of demand for travel once Covid restrictions were removed and built appropriate buffers into our plans in order to deal with a reasonable level of additional disruption," a spokesperson told the Irish Independent. “This weekend, system pressures from ATC strikes, and ongoing issues at airports and among third party suppliers, have regrettably necessitated the cancellation of some flights. “This pressure on the system has been compounded by a spike in Covid cases among our own teams in the last number of days. Where cancellations have occurred, Aer Lingus has sought to re-accommodate disrupted passengers on the next available alternative service. "Aer Lingus wishes to apologise to those customers that have been impacted." As of Monday morning, Aer Lingus continues to publicly respond to customer complaints on Twitter, citing operational issues. Some customers had taken to Twitter to note that adequate notice had failed to be provided to them, nor was an adequate explanation for the cancellations outlined.
