Following talks between the public service unions and the Government, almost 300,000 public servants are set to receive a €1,000 pay rise, five months earlier than planned.
Under the Lansdowne Road Agreement, public servants that were earning less than €65,000 a year were due to receive an increase of €1,000 on 1 September to partially restore austerity pay cuts.
It now appears that this payment is likely to be brought forward to the end of March, or the beginning of April, as the Government aims to address “anomalies” that followed on from last year’s €50 million pay agreement for gardaí.
Various unions have been critical of the fact that their members stayed within the regulations of the Lansdowne Road agreement, while the gardaí rejected it and were granted an additional €4,000 per year.
It's expected that the Minister for Public Expenditure, Pascal Donohue, will brief his fellow TD's on the details of the these talks this afternoon during the Cabinet meeting in Government Buildings.
