Proper Pride celebrations are back for the first time since 2019.

Every June, parades, parties and demonstrations are held around the world to mark Pride month. For decades, Pride has been a time of year when people come together to celebrate the progression made in regards to gay rights.  Whether you're an ally or a member of the LGBTQI+ community yourself, there are plenty of ways to join in and show your support - ways that may seem small, but are actually very powerful.

1. Educate

The festivities can sometimes overshadow the historic and important events that took place in the gay rights movement over the years. The best way you can support any cause or movement is to fully know what you are supporting. So naturally, people are most supportive when they truly understand the issues that affect the LGBTQI+ community. The Stonewall Riots were a pivotal starting point for the movement, so learning about that is a great place to start.

2. Donate

There are so many wonderful organisations to donate to this Pride month. LGBT Ireland is an Irish support service for LGBTQI+ people and their family and friends, which aims to offer support and information nationally. There's also Transgender Equality Network Ireland (TENI) is a non-profit member-driven organisation that advocates for across legal, medical, societal and political structures. Both organisations have recently come together to launch Trans Equality Together, a coalition working to create an Ireland where trans and non-binary people are equal, safe and valued. And for young people, BelongTo works to eliminate homophobia and transphobia, while supporting LGBTQI+ young people and families in need. 3.  Become an advocate

Call out homophobia or transphobia when you see it. It may seem small, but addressing this type of behaviour can really help make the world a safer space for gay and transgender people. Get involved with initiatives that help the movement. For example, if you're a college student, join your LGBTQI+ society and help out with events. And if there isn't society - start one!

4. Have conversations

Take the time to talk to the LGBTQI+ people in your life, listen to their stories, their experiences and keep an open mind.

5. Take part

What better way to show your support than to getting involved in the celebrations? Check what's on in your local area and don't forget to dress for the occasion! Dublin Pride Festival takes places from 22 to 26 June. The parade this year kicks off at 12pm on Saturday 25 June - and going without one since 2019, it's bound to be unforgettable.
