If you're worried that someone in your life is struggling, it can be difficult to know what you can do to help. When it comes to supporting someone at risk of suicide, knowing what signs to look out for and the steps you should take can be really helpful for getting the support they need. That's why Pieta, Ireland’s national suicide prevention charity, are using January to bring awareness to their 'SIGNS of Suicide' campaign. As over half of Pieta’s clients are under 25 years old, they're encouraging everyone to swap the small talk for the big talk and learn more about the 'SIGNS of Suicide'. Pieta are urging everyone to get familiar with the 'SIGNS of Suicide', to help family or friends support someone who might be at risk of suicide. The five 'SIGNS of Suicide' to look out for are:

• Sleep disturbance
• Isolation
• Giving away possessions
• No interest in anything
• Speaking of no future

What can I do to help someone at risk?

If a loved one is showing any of these signs, there are some simple steps you can take to support that person. Pieta recommends the A.P.R method (Ask, Persuade, Refer), which, like CPR, can save a life. If you're worried about someone, don't be afraid to Ask the person directly if they're thinking about suicide. Talking to them openly about what's going on and listening to what they have to say is one of the best things you can do. Once you've asked the question, gently Persuade the person to seek help or allow you to assist them in getting help. Finally, you can Refer or guide them to Pieta, by offering to make the call or traveling with them to the appointment. Pieta’s professional counsellors specialise in suicide prevention, with centres all over Ireland.
