Women in Sport: A Day Of Mixed Fortunes In Luxembourg For Irish Select Basketball Squad

It was a mixed day for the Women’s Premier League Select side as they kicked off their JPEE 2015 Challenge in Luxembourg on Saturday. The Irish side started brightly with a good win over Scotland early on, but it was hosts Luxembourg who proved to be the stumbling block as the day progressed. Ireland dominated from start to finish against Scotland, with Aoife McDermott netting a whopping 22 points on route to her side’s 88 to 30 point victory. The squad warming up for the games today.  Luxembourg posed a much bigger challenge though later in the afternoon, and Ireland were leading by just one point (34 to 33) at the end of the second quarter. The girls in green had a narrow advantage (50 to 48) going into the last, but it wasn’t enough as Luxembourg pulled through to victory, 77 to 63. The squad now faces Scotland again on Sunday before going head to head with Luxembourg once more on Monday.
