Thankfully, we’re living in a society where women are finally shouting out to have their voices heard.
Yes, we’re fighting a gender pay gap. We’re becoming more educated. We’re recognising our own worth.
Unfortunately, there’s a level of ingrained lifestyles that have been taught and learned from tradition. It’s not on purpose, or meant to cause harm.
It’s a generational divide that we all have to work harder to crack.
Being a feminist doesn’t mean you blame every individual man you know for hundreds of years of oppressive behaviour.
But for the movement to become more successful, we need to accept that men have to embrace the change too.
That’s probably why this ad from Aerial about gender stereotyping is having such a massive effect in India.
The video, which opens with a women getting home from work, is a scene we can all relate to…
Entering the scene, a woman gets home from work carrying shopping bags, while still on the phone to a colleague. She’s rushing to prepare food for her family, while ploughing on with household chores.
In the background her father is playing with her son and her husband works on his laptop before sitting down for a few minutes to watch TV.
When the woman hands her father a return ticket home, he writes her a brief letter of a learned divide.
Yes, we know there’s a lot of men who hugely contribute to running the household, but this simple advert is a gentle reminder for women going it alone that it might not be intentional that they’re multitasking on a daily basis.
And that it’s everyone’s responsibility to take part in making some of life’s tiresome tidbits equal.
