11. Keep the oven door closed.

 

We all know what it’s like when you’re cooking something for your dinner and you’re absolutely starving. Chances are you’ll constantly keep checking your food, mentally willing it to cook as fast as possible so you can enjoy it.

It goes against our natural instincts, but one of the best ways to save energy and money in the kitchen is to stop opening the oven door when you’re in the middle of cooking or baking.

Now, we all know that you have to check your food on occasion to make sure that it’s not burning and to see if it’s actually cooking properly, but you might want to bear the following in mind: every time you open the oven door, the temperature inside the appliance can drop by as many as 25 degrees.

This means that when you do close the door again, your oven will have to work extra hard in order to get the temperature back up, so it’ll be using more electricity than necessary and, subsequently, costing you more money in the long run.

A good rule of thumb is to only check your food the minimum amont of times as possible. If your oven has a glass door, use that to see if your food is okay rather than opening the door and wasting some electricity (and heat!).
