Sex – it can be hard to get it right. Yes, for many of us, nights of amazing, mind-blowing sex occur once in a blue moon and once you’ve experienced this kind of sex, it can be hard to recreate it again at a later date.

Unless you’re absolutely blessed in the sexy time department, fantastic bedroom action can have a slightly mythical quality about it. We know it exists but we’ve only experienced it a handful of times.

Never underestimate the power of flattering lighting

Flattering lighting: Nothing kills the mood faster than the glare of a harsh, unforgiving, florescent light. When it comes to great sex, you want the kind of lighting that makes you look soft, curvy and oh-so-sexy.

Feeling comfortable: Part of having great sex is having a connection with your other half. We all know that when we’re relaxed, it’s easier to orgasm. Therefore we need someone who makes us feel comfortable and safe.

Great kisses: Never underestimate the power of the humble kiss when it comes to making sex fantastic. A few, romantic, passionate kisses are worth their weight in gold in the foreplay stakes. If someone isn’t a good kisser, chances are the sex won’t be as enjoyable.

Some good music (to set the mood): You want a tune that has a sexy beat but doesn’t sound too sleazy. For example, a nice piece of instrumental music is great. A filthy RnB track, not so much (unless that’s the kind of mood you’re trying to set...)

A lack of expectations: Yes we know that you want it to be great and fantastic and all of that but having high expectations just puts pressure on yourself and your partner. Instead, relax and just let whatever is going to happen, happen.

Laughter: It’s important to understand that embarrassing moments will happen and awkward situations will occur. The best thing you can do is to bring a sense of humour into the bedroom. Laughter can turn even the most mortifying of situations around.

Privacy: In order to have truly fantastic sex you need to have a bit of private time with your other half. This means that no housemates/family members/pets should be in the vicinity when you start getting it on.

An open mind: Sometimes our sexiest encounters occur when we let down our defences and are willing to try something new. Try keeping an open mind and experimenting a little – hey, you never know, you might like it!
