If Bali is on your list of places to visit next year, you might want to reconsider your choice.

According to a new study published in Fodor's Travel "No List", they've listed Bali as one of their 13 places to reconsider travelling to. Why? Well, Indonesia's most visited Island is suffering from the effects of high tourism levels over the past few years. So much so, the government is thinking of weighing a tourist tax to help combat some of the harsh problems overtourism has created on their environment. In 2017, Bali had a "garbage emergency" due to the amount of plastic left on their beaches. The Island also produces 3,800 tons of waste every day, with only 60% ending up in landfills. Water scarcity is also another major problem for the island, with the development of luxury villas and golf courses noted as a major issue that has impacted the profits of local farmers. And besides the environmental impacts, Bali authorities are now hoping to bring in new guidelines and rules to combat tourists "visiting religious sites in bathing suits, climbing over sacred sites, and generally disrespecting customs and cultural norms," reads the report. Bali was named under Fodor's Travel "No List" as one of the places that don't want you (or want you in small and better doses). So, if you're planning your 2020 trip maybe leave Bali off the agenda, however, if you're ultra keen on going just remember to be respectful towards the place, people and the culture and clean up after you.
