According to the Irish Times, the assessment of the 42 towns and cities was compiled by An Taisce. The paper reported that all but seven towns achieved "clean" rating.
The survey found that Castlebar was "littered", Tallaght, Dublin Airport's environs, Mullingar, Tipperary Town and Portlaoise were "moderately littered".
However, Dublin's inner city was labelled as a "litter black spot". Although the city centre was given a clean rating, the Northeast of the city was described as "extremely dirty".
Dublin City Council announced that they are aware of the problem and are putting together a series of plans to help tackle the problem, including calling to resident's houses who they believe are littering on the street.
