It's an office right of passage that when it's your birthday you get mortified with a cake and card.
There's usually one every few weeks and people just get used to signing cards without even reading them. You almost write the card on autopilot with the same message to all your colleagues, "Happy Birthday ____, hope you have a great day."
But from now on you might want to pay more attention because it won't always be a birthday card that's being passed around. It could be a mass card or new baby card.

She overlooked the key message of the card which read, "Thinking of you as you remember and holding you in thought as you move through this difficult time".
