If you’re anything but a morning person, chances are your cup of coffee is the one thing to get you through the day. But it might not be just the kick of caffeine that’s giving you some extra pep in your step. According to a new study conducted by campaign group Action on Sugar, there is a ‘dangerously high’ amount of sugar in some flavoured coffees and hot drinks. Working through some of the best-known coffee shops and fast food chains, the group found alarming levels of sugar lurking in some carry cups. Starbucks racked up the highest sugar content, with a venti Grape with Chai, Orange and Cinnamon Hot Mulled Fruit drink totting up 25 teaspoons of sugar per serving. The coffee chain Costa’s massimo eat-in Chai Latte boasted 20 teaspoons of sugar, while Starbucks’ venti White Chocolate Mocha with Whipped Cream was found to have 18, a spokesman added. KFC’s mocha and Starbucks’ Signature Hot Chocolate both had 15 teaspoons of sugar per serving – which are all exceptionally more than the standard can of coke, which has eight teaspoons of sugar in their full-fat can. Speaking about the results, Professor Graham MacGregor of Action on Sugar, said: “This is yet again another example of scandalous amount of sugar added to our food and drink. “David Cameron now has all the evidence to make the UK the first country in the world to stop the obesity and type 2 diabetes epidemic.”
