It's everyone's worst nightmare.
You're walking alone. It might be late at night or early in the morning. You might even feel a little bit nervous but you're unsure why. When all of a sudden you are attacked. Your handbag is stolen and you are left shaken and alone on the street.
It's a terrifying thought but unfortunately it is something that happens to far too many Irish woman and men every day. Two years ago it happened to Thalia Heffernan.
The 22-year-old model who hails from Donnybrook was mugged two years ago on her way to an early morning modelling job in Brown Thomas one Tuesday morning.
''I couldn't get a taxi and it was getting to the point where I was going to be late so I thought I would just walk it. I avoided the main streets because I didn't want to bump into lots of drunk people when I was on my way to work. I went down Cuffe Street and that is where I was attacked.''
It's an event that completely changed her outlook on crime in Ireland.
''I didn't think it would ever happen to me. I never thought I would be robbed on my way to work regardless of how early in the morning it was.''
Since then Thalia has managed to put the incident behind her and she is glad that she can now make a positive difference by getting involved in Garda Síochana's new StreetWise campaign.
''I want to be able to show people that it happens to absolutely anyone and everyone. You can't predict this kind of situation. This whole campaign is all about trying to stop this happening as much as possible...It's all about small steps you can take to protect yourself.''
The campaign's slogan is #mindyourstuff. Thalia explains that is all about taking little steps to help protect your belongings and yourself when you are out and about.
''What we are trying to do is give the public a few easy tips and points to remember before their night out so that they are prepared.''
Here is some advice from the campaign:
Plan your night out. How are you getting there and how are you getting back?
Let someone know where you are going and when you are coming back.
Avoid walking alone in dark places.
Book your taxis in advance.
Never attempt to reason with drunk or aggressive people.
Streetwise: Be aware of your surroundings and mind your property.
