Texas teenager Macy Edgerly was sent home from school last week because her outfit wasn't viewed as suitable school attire.
The 18-year-old was dressed in leggings and a longline t-shirt when she was told to go home.
Her sister Erica
decided to share the story on Facebook in a bid to "stand up for her family and for women".
The dress code at Orangefield Independent School District states that leggings are permitted when worn with a top that is "below fingertips when hands are held straight down at your side".
In Macy's case, the front and back of her t-shirt was decreed appropriate but the sides were not.
Erica has since taken to Facebook to highlight the fact that she did not intend to bring negative attention to the school.
She was quick to point out that the post was intended as a message "to society in general considering this happens all over the nation every day".
Erica maintains that her issue is that women "are seen as sexual beings" and asked the question "why is it okay for men to run around without a shirt, but a woman in a sports bra is scandalous?"
