So, how was your sex education at school?
Apparently, not so great for plenty of us. As you might know, we've teamed up with the morning after pill, ellaOne, to highlight some of their research that has shown six in ten 18 to 24-year-olds have had unprotected sex in Ireland and 17 percent of these have unprotected sex every time, or the majority of the time.
We're pretty curious as to why this happens and why people aren't FAR more responsible when it comes to having safe sex. One of the factors that springs to mind is the lack of sex education in schools, and it doesn't seem any more informative today than it was when we were back in school ourselves. We headed to Cork city to hear what people had to say.
The question posed to each person was, 'Where did you get your sex education?' Simples.
One man said;
"Sex education came mainly from friends, which was all incorrect... and porn sadly."
A young woman said;
"I think I got most of it from my parents, and it was so vague. And the internet - that was it. I never got told about the morning after pill, I got told nothing about contraception."
When another young woman was asked if she was surprised to hear that six in ten 18-24-year-olds have unprotected sex, she replied;
"No. You’re not taught about it [sex]. People are brought up to think sex is sex - you have sex and that’s it."
Oh, but there's a whole lot more than just the physical act to think about - pregnancy, risk of STIs, contraception, the morning after pill! We need to be empowered and educated so that sex isn't viewed as something shameful or shrouded in secrecy.
