Seven Reasons You Should Stay At… Fitzpatrick Castle Hotel, Killiney

It's good to get away. It's better when you don't have to travel too far! Recently, Her.ie took a short trip from our Dublin HQ out to Killiney, checking in to the four-star Fitzpatrick Castle Hotel for a night away from it all. Here are seven reasons why you might consider doing the same...

The Hills Are Alive...

With Bono warming up his vocal chords? It's likely. This castle in nestled in the affluent surrounds of Killiney, one of the capital's most picturesque locations. Though you're a mere 20km from the city centre, the lush greenery and sea view will have you feeling like you've travelled much farther.

Your Mother Would LOVE It

Our first impression of walking in to FCH was that it was the kind of place Mammy Her would have delighted in bringing her young ones for a few hours of a Sunday afternoon. Don't get us wrong now - it's impeccably maintained, but the hotel retains that old, lovely, warm feel of the magical hotels of your childhood. None of these minimalist chairs that make your bum hurt after sitting down for five minutes. Lots of colour and cushions, and sofas you can really sink in to with a cup of tea or a glass of wine.

The Personal Touch

Fitzpatrick Castle Hotel is a family-run affair, and has been for over forty years. It shows. Our lovely hosts filled us in on the family trade, where it all began and how far it has spread - those of you who have visited New York will doubtless have come across Fitzpatrick Manhattan and Fitzpatrick Grand Central. These guys know how it's done.

Wining and Dining

Whether it's afternoon tea in a light-filled lobby by a grand piano you're after, a pint while you watch the match in the Dungeon Bar (located in the original castle vaults), or a nice Pinot in the comfortable Library Bar - you have plenty to choose from when it comes to having a tipple. For meal times, you're all set with The Grill at the Castle and PJ’s Restaurant.

On Your Doorstep

Visitors to the castle will find a range of leisure activities on offer, including garden walks, castle tours, local golf and nearby Killiney beach. While we were in town, we paid a visit to the fabulous Dalkey Castle and Heritage Centre, learning about the local history of the area through a compelling and interactive programme that comes highly recommended. While out an about, we also stopped in to Biddy's Cottage, a trip we can't speak highly enough of. Simply put: go see her.

Just Keep Swimming

It's to our shame that our trip never included a stop-off in the leisure facilities (we'll go ahead and blame the sing-song that ended at approximately five am), but it's top of the list for the next trip. You'll find a fully equipped gym, along with a 20-metre indoor swimming pool with an on-deck whirlpool spa and Scandinavian wood sauna and steam room.

A Little Bit of History

If you love a building with history and tales to beat the band, you'll find a hearty welcome and plenty of said stories on offer. The original house was built in 1740 - let than sink in! Sit back and relax by that fire and hear a little bit of history before retiring away to a cosy bed. Bliss.
