So it might not be viewed as much of a national day here but across the Atlantic I Am In Control Day is quite a historical day.
It originates from 1981 when the Secretary of State Alexander Haig said “I am in control here” during an interview about the assassination attempt on President Ronald Reagan.
But it has actually turned into a day when some sit down and take control of their lives. So if you fancy doing that this year, here are a few quick tips on how to go about it…
Make a list – Whether it’s what you have to do that day or what you need to get at the shops, lists make life much easier. It sounds obvious but it stops you forgetting things and will give you a sense of satisfaction when you tick something off.
Establish goals – This is more to do with your long-term plans. Whether it’s a new job, your dream house or a trip around the world (we wish!), write down what you want to achieve. Having direction means having control.
Stay energised – Get into a routine including a good night’s sleep. It’s the best way to keep your energy levels up and will allow you to think clearer. It might also save you some money in terms of the coffees and concealer.
Exercise regularly – They do say that a healthy body equals a healthy mind… or is it the other way round? Anyway, getting some exercise every day helps clear your mind, maintains focus and prevents stress. If you don't have time to join a gym or class, walking works just as well.
Keep in touch – It can be easy to let your social life fall by the wayside but make sure to stay in touch with friends and family. Control in this area of your life is just as important so pen in that lunch date now!
Find a hobby – Life’s not all about work so also think about what you want to do on a personal level. Perhaps you’ve always wanted to learn about photography or maybe play the guitar. Whatever it is, now is the time to do it.
Relax – You don’t have to be on the go to be in control of your life. Taking some time out to read a book and run a bath is the perfect way to switch off for a while and again it will help to prevent stress which can often throw you off track.
