We've heard of all the old wives tales on how to tell if you are having a boy or a girl - but now there could be a more accurate way to guess the sex of your baby.
Researchers have found that women who gain
less weight during pregnancy are more likely to have a girl.
The observational study, published in
PLOS ONE, accounts for more than 68 million births over 23 years.
Of course, your baby's gender is determined at conception but this way could be more accurate than simply guessing by the shape of your bump. (Although I would like to give a special shout out to my server at McDonald's who correctly predicted my son would be a boy)
Cosmopolitan writes that this study identifies a
correlation and not a cause, so losing or gaining baby weight will not have an effect throughout your pregnancy.
Researchers still really can't explain why weight gain could predict gender, but they discovered that mums-to-be who only gained low amounts of weight and miscarried were more likely to lose a male fetus.
It's believed that before birth, boys have a higher metabolic rate than girls which mean they need more nutrients for growth and development.
But do remember the results don't prove causation so nothing you do during your pregnancy can change the sex of your baby.
It is recommended that a healthy pregnancy weight gain for mums is between 25 to 35 pounds.
