Medical advances in stem-cell treatment are reversing the crippling effects of multiple sclerosis. According to The Telegraph, patients embarking on the treatment have regained the ability to walk and have seen the symptoms of the disease halt completely. Holly Drewry from Sheffield told the BBC Panorama programme that the treatment saved her life. Holly was left wheelchair bound after the birth of her daughter Isla. “I couldn’t walk steadily. I couldn’t trust myself holding her in case I fell. Being a new mum I wanted to do it all properly but my MS was stopping me from doing it. “It is scary because you think, when is it going to end?” she said. Holly underwent treatment in The Royal Hallamshire Hospital in Sheffield. The treatment involves high doses of chemotherapy to break down the body’s immune system and then rebuilding it with stem cells created from the patient’s own blood. “I started seeing changes within days of the stem cells being put in,” Holly said. “I walked out of the hospital. I walked into my house and hugged Isla. I cried and cried. It was a bit overwhelming. It was a miracle.” Other patients have reported similar results.
