It looks like opposites don't attract.

How many times have you heard the old adage that opposites attract? Or that people with very different personalities are often the best possible match for each other? Well, we're finally able to call BS on it. According to new research, it's not humor or good looks that attract people, it's our intelligence. Apparently, people with the DNA for top grades in school (or the smarty pants) are more likely to marry and have children with a partner with the same genes (or fellow smarty pants). So, basically, people tend to fall in love with people with similar intelligence. The research was conducted by a group of economists and psycologists from the University of East Anglia and VU University in the Netherlands. While previous studies have shown that couples are drawn together by their education and intelligence this is the first one to show that it is in fact part of our DNA. The research team are now warning that the trend could escalate genetic and social inequality in the future, which is a scary thought. Speaking to The Daily Mail Dr. David Hugh-Jones, lead author of the study stated that

''The consequences of assortative mating on education and cognitive abilities are relevant for society...This may increase social inequality, for example with respect to education or income.''
