Are my dildos adding to climate change?

Let’s be clear – the last thing anyone wants is to feel guilty around sex or masturbation. But, along with lots of other man-made things we use and enjoy regularly, some of our sex toys aren’t as eco-friendly as they could be. Anything plastic isn't great for the environment, from the carbon emissions released in production to the build-up of plastic waste once we throw things away. Plastics can also contain toxins like phthalates, which is used to soften plastics for the likes of dildos and butt plugs. Despite this important function, they are bad for both the planet and our bodies.  

Is there an alternative?

Look for sex toys made from non-porous materials like silicone. You could also check out toys made from more sustainable materials like glass, wood, steel and aventurine jade, a beautiful type of quartz. If that weren't enough, rechargeable toys exist so you can save on batteries and you can now even purchase solar-powered bullets. No excuses, gals. Want ultimate eco-warrior points? The Gaia is the world's first biodegradable vibe and it's surprisingly affordable.  

Can I dispose of old sex toys in a green way?

While sex toy recycling companies exist in the States, we're not aware of anywhere you can recycle your worn-out rabbit here.  

What about other sex products?

When it comes to lubricants, you might think that choosing a natural substance would be best but that's not necessarily true. Though we use it for just about everything else, coconut oil could affect your internal pH balance and lead to a nasty infection. Others recommend aloe but make sure it's completely natural and doesn't contain any preservatives or nasties that could upset your vag. Oils can also damage condoms and increase the risk of breakages. Luckily, there are loads of eco-friendly lubes out there. Look out for the words 'water-based', 'organic' and 'vegan' - and for certification to prove their credentials. As for eco-friendly condoms? The best way to be sustainable is to make use of what you have.

Like with everything, buying new stuff all the time is bad for the planet. It's pretty simple - look after what you already have and use it over and over. With costumes, toys and other products; keep them clean and store them safely and hygienically. Invest in sustainable lingerie and be aware that materials like jelly rubber/ latex/ PVC have to be landfilled. When you do want to buy something new, ask whether the item you're considering will be something you'll love and use a lot or just use a few times and lose interest in.
