Coal-fired power has not been used in the UK for more than five days, a first for more than 100 years.
As of Monday morning the National Grid said it has been more than 118 hours since the UK had used coal power - the longest period of time the country has gone without since its first coal power station opened in 1882.
A government spokesperson told the
Independent: "We’re closing in on phasing out coal entirely from our power system by 2025 as our renewables sector goes from strength to strength on our path to becoming the first major economy to legislate for net zero emissions."
In 2019 the UK has gone more than 1,000 hours without using coal-fired power.
However, experts have countered that most of the UK's coal power is being replaced with gas, another fossil fuel.
This comes after a
climate emergency was declared last week by the UK government, a world first.
Soon afterwards, Wicklow became the first county in Ireland to do the same.
