Ahead of the release of the much-anticipated He Named Me Malala, Nobel Prize winner Malala Yousafzai met with UN Goodwill Ambassador Emma Watson to discuss her life, advocacy and views on feminism.
The documentary sheds light on the events leading up to the Taliban attack on Yousafzai. The attack subsequently inspired Yousafzai to become an advocate for education rights for girls.
Watson says that the most profound moment was when Yousafzai identified herself as a feminist, something that surprised her given the negative connotations of the word.
“I think this gesture is so emblematic of what Malala and I went on to discuss. I’ve spoken before on what a controversial word feminism is currently,” Watson wrote on Facebook. “I want to make it a welcoming and inclusive movement. Let’s join our hands and move together so we can make real change. Malala and I are pretty serious about it but we need you.”
