Former Crimewatch star Nick Ross has hit back after being criticised for his recent comments about rape.

The presenter has taken to Twitter to defend himself against the backlash which stems from his latest book Crime.

According to reports today he said that “half of all women who have had penetrative sex unwillingly do not think they were raped” because the assault had involved a boyfriend, they had been drunk or they had led the man on.

The Mail On Sunday, which is serialising the book, quotes him as saying: “We would laugh at a bank that stored sacks of cash by the front door. We would be aghast if an airport badly skimped on its security.”

Ross is also said to have commented on the behaviour and choices of women since the 1960s. He said that people would have been shocked that “girls mostly unescorted stay out late, often get profoundly drunk and sometimes openly kiss, grope or go to bed with one-night stands.”

A spokeswoman for The End Violence Against Women Coalition has condemned the remarks, calling them “provocative, crude and really horrible.”

But Ross has taken to Twitter and accused the Mail of twisting his words. He told his followers that he had been misquoted and that his argument was the opposite of what the newspaper was making out.

He tweeted: “Mail said the opposite of what I reported… The point I’m making is rape is MORE common… My book says we shd stop thinking in terms of blame [sic]”.
