Team GB are off and running with their first medals of the Rio Olympics.

And just before Carlin took to the water, Adam Peaty, 21, took Britain's first gold of the games when he romped home in first place in the 100m breaststroke - smashing his own world record, which he had set just 24 hours earlier. He finished with a time of 57.13sec, more than a second and a half quicker than his nearest rival, South Africa's Cameron van der Burgh “This is what you dream of," he is quoted as saying by the Mirror. "Every time you want to go back to bed at 4am when the alarm goes off and it's still dark outside, this makes it all worthwhile." While Adam was of course thrilled, back home in Staffordshire his family was over the moon - none more so than his nan Mavis, who has become an overnight hit on Twitter - racking up an extra 3,000 followers over the weekend.
