Meeting your partner's parents can be a nerve-wracking thing, but usually, your significant other is there to talk you through it and make you feel a little more at ease.
Unfortunately for one woman, this was not how things went. Not only was her boyfriend unsupportive, but he actually signed her up for etiquette lessons behind her back to ensure his parents would be impressed.
Taking to Reddit's infamous Am I The Asshole forum, the man explained what had happened.
He had been dating his girlfriend for three months and thought it was time to introduce her to his family. However, he was a little hesitant because he came from a privileged background, while she had grown up with “financial challenges”.
"She lacks the manners that my family typically expects from someone I’m in a relationship with," he wrote.
“My gf is the first less-fortunate woman I’m dating. For that reason, I made the effort to prepare her for her first dinner with my family.”
Naturally, when his girlfriend found out he had signed her up for the classes, she wasn't exactly thrilled - but the man couldn't understand why.
"When I told her she was absolutely furious. She claimed that I’m ‘obviously embarrassed’ to be with her and that I should just marry a ‘rich girl’ instead.
“She even accused me of being ‘just another white, privileged guy’. To make matters worse she said that it’s ‘racially insensitive’ of me to feel the need to teach her how to behave.”
Redditors rushed to the comments to share their opinions, with most of them siding with the woman.
"If you seriously don't see the unpleasant racial tones of you, a white wealthy guy, making your non-white GF take freaking etiquette classes to pass muster with your snobby, judgmental rich white family, you really should not be with a woman of colour," one person wrote.
“Honestly, you're the classless one, the one without etiquette. She deserves better," another said.
A third added: "It may be a better idea to talk to your family and tell them they need to get ready for a dose of reality."
