"O F F • A I R I’ve been sharing my life and my views and my shameless selfies for what feels like forever, on Facebook and Twitter, on Instagram and Snapchat. And I’ve always thought that social media enriched my life. It connected me with people I’d never otherwise have met and it gave me an audience of friends and peers and it gave me an OUTLET for all of those outraged and excited and devastated thoughts I so frequently have. But lately I’ve been wondering, more and more, whether social media is a blessing or a curse. I feel a little like Buffy, in the episode where she can hear people’s thoughts. At first it feels like a thrilling gift. But after a while, she can’t drown them out. It’s all noise. I need to figure out who I am without the filter, what thoughts I’d pay attention to if I wasn’t wondering whether they’d make a good tweet. TL;DR – a good friend pointed out to me yesterday that I have better, more valuable, things I could be doing offline, and I think he might be right. Social media isn’t improving my life. (Disclaimer: I might be back. I might not. This isn’t meant to be a dramatic exit – pursued by a bear – rather an explanation, in case you miss Coileán and wonder where she is.) "Chatting with Rosemary last week before she went dark on social media we asked her whether she's fully retired from her life as an 'online scrapper':
"I'm not scrapping anymore, I'll blog occasionally if I feel like it and I won't if I don't feel like, I don't really care anymore".We also found out whether she ever feels wistful for the days of her Twitter brawls:
"No it makes me feel exhausted for them, it's not worth it... It's really really hard to turn off"
We have to applaud her bravery in choosing to step away from something that she's so synonymous with. We hope she'll be back online soon and until then if you're looking for a Rosemary fix make sure you listen to the first episode of Girls With Goals or catch up on how she's doing more recently in the new episode on Soundcloud or iTunes.
