A couple in India have welcomed their first child after 46 years of trying for a baby.

The Times of India report that Mohinder Singh Gill and his wife Daljinder Kaur had a baby boy last month, whom they named Arman (meaning wish/desire). Kaur had gone through two years of IVF treatment and gave birth at the age of 72. She told the times that people had suggested adoption to the couple, but she had wanted to bear her own child. She and her husband have been married for 46 years and had tried for a baby naturally for many years before Arman was born. "There were two failed attempts, but finally I have my baby," she said. When asked about raising a child with her 79-year-old husband, she replied: "I don't think there will be any problem in raising him. He will go to a good school." According to the BBC, many older women in India feel pressured to give birth because of inheritance rules and the pressure on women to have children. Fertility clinic head Anurag Bishnoi said the risks of Kaur undergoing IVF were as dangerous as if she was middle aged, as the 72-year-old underwent many rigorous tests to determine her health and fitness levels according to The Guardian.
