It's pricey enough to get away for a few days so while when we're off on our hols, we try to save a few bob by travelling light and packing our essentials into cabin-friendly luggage. Unfortunately, it seems that our budget measure might soon be a thing of the past, as a global organisation is now calling for the introduction of tighter restrictions on the measurement of carry-on suitcases. The International Air Transport Association has advised that the 'optimal' size should be 21.5 inches tall by 13.5 inches wide by 7.5 inches deep. This is smaller than the current guidelines for Irish airlines, as Aer Lingus allows 21.5 x 15.5 x 9.5 and Ryanair allows approximately 21.65 x 15.74 x 7.87. The new regulation, which is not mandatory, is a response to a lack of space in overhead lockers on planes and if introduced, could leave many passengers with suitcases that no longer fit the size requirements. Here's hoping the airlines ignore the new rules or we could be heading to Sligo instead of the Santa Ponza next summer!
