This is surprising.
A new survey by Bayer, to mark World Contraception Day 2016 today
, has highlighted the impact of stress on Irish women, so much so, that
6 in 10 admitted to being too preoccupied to remember daily tasks as a result. The research was conducted amongst Irish women aged 21-29.
It found that women are forgetting daily tasks such as taking off their makeup, charging their phone, and the most shocking of all, taking their contraceptive pill, due to stress.
More than two-thirds of Irish millennial women forget to take their contraceptive pill once or twice a month, with some forgetting to take the pill once a week or a few times a week.
68% admit they are more likely to forget their contraceptive pill when stressed and preoccupied. Of those, over half have considered alternative contraception methods that do not need to be taken daily.
According to Trinity College Dublin psychologist Professor Sabina Brennan:
“This new research sheds great light on the impact of daily stress on millennial women’s habits and memory – it adds to existing work on the unique challenges faced by the millennial generation; challenges previous generations have not had to face.
Stress can sometimes be spoken about in a light-hearted manner without a real appreciation for how poorly managed chronic stress truly affects us long-term.”
The new research shows that over three-quarters blame major life changes for increasing their stress levels and ability to remember daily responsibilities.
The top five life changes which result in stress for Irish millennial women include the following:
- Starting a new job/course
- Having an argument with a close friend/family
- Starting a new diet/exercise regime
- Moving house
- Family bereavement
