New movie ‘This Is 40’ hits Irish cinemas this week and in the sort-of sequel to ‘Knocked Up’ Paul Rudd and Leslie Mann’s characters are confronting the realities that come with life in your forties. Before you get there, we’ve compiled a list of forty things your really should do, before life begins again at the big Four-O.

1. Go to the opera.
2. Ditto for the ballet.
3. Brave a Whitney number at a karaoke bar.
4. Learn how to drive, even if you live in a city where you don’t need a car.
5. Go surfing.
6. Go fishing.
7. Get your girls together for a week of fun in the sun.
8. Keep a plant alive for more than a month.
9. Host a dinner party for at least six people.
10. Splash out and buy a really fancy bottle of wine. You deserve it, and you can go back to the €6 bottle next time.
