I love Wordle. It took me a while to come around to it — not because I was one of those grumps who gave out about the results colouring up my Twitter feed, I hasten to add. I just couldn't stay awake until midnight (hi, toddler) and by the next day it somehow seemed 'over'. But I got over that, and now I'm a card-carrying member of the Wordle gang.
Oh but I didn't stop there. In my usual 'all or nothing' fashion, I'm now playing four versions of the the digital word game and I'm not even sorry. Most people have attempted Worldle (the Geography version) and Quordle (four Wordles at once), but there are many more where that came from. Let's take a look at some of the best.
Here we go...
1. Nerdle
If you’re more of a numbers person than a word person,
Nerdle is the game for you. Each of the eight tiles represents a mathematical calculation and you have six tries to guess it. If you love solving tricky equations, give it a bash but be warned, it will absolutely WRECK your head.
2. Foclach
Lads, I'll leave you to it with this one because my Irish is pants, but my family are playing it and loving it.
Foclach works just like World, except it's as Gaeilge.
3. Worldle
Speaking of things I'm pants at, it turns out my Geography is also awful. Even still,
Worldle is a bit of craic and I feel like I learn something from it every day. It shows you the shape of a country or territory and once you guess, it tells you how close you are and points you in the direction of the right country with an arrow. Sometimes it's frustratingly obscure - if you're playing it you too probably wanted to throw your phone across the room when the answer was some random, British colony in the middle of the Pacific that nobody's ever heard of.
4. Taylordle
Hey Swifties, you can now play the Taylor Swift version of Wordle -
Taylordle! Guess Taylor-related topics like song titles and pop culture references, something we’re sure you know all too well if you’re a Taylor Swift lover. See what I did there? I haven't played it but when I do my start word will ALWAYS be scarf. If you know, you know...
5. Lewdle
If you like Cards Against Humanity, this one is for you.
Lewdle is the inappropriate version of Wordle. Maybe just keep this one away from the kids.
6. Airportle
If the Taylor Swift version wasn't niche enough, behold...
Airportle. Instead of words, it's three-digit airport codes. I'm calling it — this is the nerdiest one.
7. Le Mot
Voulez-vous jouer au Wordle en Français? The French edition of Wordle, called
Le Mot and it's a great way to put your French to the test toujours. Ah wee wee... (yeah, I ran out of French.)
8. Create your own Wordle
Yep, you can create your own custom Wordle with
Custom Wordle. This would be sweet for a couple or some pals, to test each other on their relationship or gas stories that have happened over the years.
9. Quordle and Octordle
As you might guess from the names,
Quordle and
Octordle are versions of Wordle with four and eight grids respectively, instead of just the one. Each guess applies to each grid, making the whole thing a little more tricky. You do, however, get more guesses on each than the original game. Top tip: Input three words that cover off LOTS of letters as your first three guesses. It's pretty plain sailing from there.
10. Heardle
My new favourite is a music version called
Heardle. It's essentially a song intro guessing game, adjusted to fit the Wordle format. This one is pretty hard too, but it's fun enough to keep me coming back in spite of my many failures.
