Supermarket chain Asda has withdrawn a Halloween costume sold as a ‘mental patient fancy dress costume’ after harsh criticisms.
The costume, which was on sale for £20 on the supermarket’s website, included clothing created to look like a straight-jacket, fake blood, a meat cleaver and a mask showing a distorted and bloody face.
The description on the site read; "Everyone will be running away from you in fear in this mental patient fancy dress costume.... it's a terrifying Halloween option."
Late on Wednesday night the store offered its apologies via Twitter, saying: “We're deeply sorry one of our fancy dress costumes has upset people. This was an unacceptable error - the product was withdrawn immediately.” The costume had been on sale since Monday last.

The apology came after consumers and mental health charities lashed out at the chain for its “grossly insensitive” product.
