This may make you gag. A lot.
A 10-year old girl who was complaining of swollen gums to her mum had a lot more than flossing to worry about.
Ana Cardoso from Brasilia, Brazil was complaining of constant swelling and told her mum she could feel something moving about.
Her mum Adriana thought her daughter was joking, and instead started increasing how often she brushed her daughter’s teeth… but nothing helped the swelling come down.
Adriana couldn’t prepare for what happened next:
“I couldn’t believe it when they said she had a disease and then started pulling the maggots out. I thought I was going to be sick.”

Ana was diagnosed with a rare form of Oral Myiasis, a fly lava maggot infection that grows in humans and animals.
Thankfully the condition is rare, but just in case we’re going to floss again.
Twice.
