Some things to note if you do commute to work.
A new study has found that people who commute to work consume nearly 800 extra calories per day and have noticed other unhealthy patterns in their lives as a result.
The Royal Society for Public Health (RSPH) in the UK surveyed 1,500 workers who commute to and from work. Of those people, the main reason for the extra intake of calories was from snacking. Train stations and bus stations are lined with coffee shops with fresh pastries displayed at the till making it increasingly more difficult for people not to snack.
The types of snacks eaten included chocolate bars and crisps, fizzy drinks, fast food meals, muffins and alcohol.
One-third of people admitted that they snack more due to their journey, while one-fifth said that they exercise less due to their commute.

The Guardian, Emma Lloyd, the report’s author, said:
“The commute is hugely stressful; we have got thousands of commuters travelling through stations which are very obesogenic, both in terms of advertising and what’s available [to eat].
It’s natural that many people will reach for comfort food to relieve boredom or stress, but it’s a high-risk strategy when so many people are overweight and obese.”
RSPH want a limit on the amount of junk food made available to commuters to try and stop the increase of calories.
