But what symptoms should we look out for?

According to the HSE, the main symptoms to beware of include discomfort in your chest that comes on suddenly and doesn't go away.

The pain men and women experience during a heart attack differs.

"It may feel like a squeezing or fullness, and the pain can be anywhere in the chest, not just on the left side," WebMD says.

Other symptoms women need to be aware of include:

1. the pain or discomfort may spread to one or both of your arms
2. pain may spread to your neck, jaw, back, or stomach
3. shortness of breath or difficulty breathing with or without chest discomfort
4. feeling dizzy, light-headed or faint
5. feeling sick, indigestion, being sick
6. sweating or cold sweats
7. a sudden feeling of anxiety that can feel like a panic attack
8. a lot of coughing or wheezing

Cardiologist Dr. Roisin Colleran previously told Her.ie that women need to take heart health seriously.
