It’s the moment we’ve been waiting for: a chocolate bar that feels and tastes like chocolate but is healthier for you.

That’s right, researchers at the University of Warwick have been developing ‘skinny’ chocolate bars.

According to reports the bars are made with fruit juice instead of fat. Diet cola and vitamin C water can also be used.

 

Fruit juices are infused into the chocolate.

What happens is up to half of the fat content usually found in chocolate bars is replaced with the juices.

But chocoholics need not worry as according to head researcher Dr Stefan Bon, the texture and taste is still chocolatey.

He explained at the annual meeting for the American Chemical Society: “We have established the chemistry that’s the starting point for healthier chocolate confectionery.”

Dr Bon also said that they are hoping their methods will become the standard: “Now we’re hoping the food industry will take the next steps and use the technology to make tasty, lower-fat chocolate bars.”

Apparently the method works for all types of chocolate but while society is all about healthier treats, there was a bit of controversy when it was proposed that vegetable oil be used instead of cocoa butter a few years ago.

And while we are all about the idea of guilt-free chocolate, we reckon some serious tasting will be required if it ever does make it to the shelves!
