For the last few weeks, we've been teaming up with morning-after pill brand ellaOne to find out just how much Irish women know about sexual health.
They've been getting on pretty well so far, which is great. It's always nice to know that only true facts are going out to their followers. Because we really do need a lot more sharing of proper sexual health information in Ireland.
Recently, ellaOne carried out a survey on 1000 18-35-year-olds in the Republic of Ireland and they found that a third of respondents received sex education in school less frequently than annually. That's less than one sex education class in an entire year! When you consider that sex is something most people will be doing for the rest of their lives, that statistic is kind of crazy. We mean, come on schools, what are you thinking?
The lack of sexual health education really shows in the rest of the survey. ellaOne found that, in the last twelve months, almost half of the respondents said that they have had unprotected sex where the contraception failed or where no contraception was used (when not trying to conceive).
Sure look, mistakes happen - we absolutely get that. But the survey also showed that 40 percent of respondents believed that the morning-after pill worked by preventing implantation of a fertilised egg. It actually works by delaying ovulation. We love that people are taking charge of their fertility choices but we think they should be taking charge of their sexual health knowledge just as much.
We want to break the stigma that comes with talking about all things sex so that everyone can be completely aware of what is happening with their bodies.

ellaOne is an emergency contraceptive pill that is available from pharmacies without a prescription. No other morning-after pill is more effective at preventing pregnancy after unprotected sex.
ellaOne consists of one film-coated tablet which should be taken as soon as possible, but no later than 5 days (120 hours) after unprotected sex or contraceptive failure. Each film-coated tablet of ellaOne contains 30 mg ulipristal acetate. Always read the label.
