We’re all fond of a glass or two of our favourite prosecco or sparkling wine.
And it’s always nice to have one chilled in the fridge if you ever want to pop it open sporadically over Christmas.
Well, it turns out, we shouldn’t be keeping sparkling wine in the fridge for prolonged periods.
It’s okay to keep it in there if you intend to drink it in the next few days but not longer than that.
Winemaker Marie-Christine Osselin told Huffington Post that it ruins the flavour.
It’s down to the cork and how it can dry out when left in the fridge.
She says, "If you’re planning to enjoy your bottle of Champagne (or sparkling wine) within 3 to 4 days of the purchase, it is fine to store the bottle in the refrigerator.
"If it sits in the fridge for weeks, the cork can dry out due to no humidity. As corks dry out, the seal between the bottle and the cork loosens up and the Champagne will oxidize faster, changing its aromas."
Instead, she suggests that you store bottles in a cool, dry area away from direct sunlight until you plan to drink them.
