St. Patrick’s Day is fast approaching and while it’s always a big deal in Ireland, it’s often celebrated even more by Irish people abroad who might feel small pangs of regret about missing out on the big day at home.
Whether it’s a time-honoured parade or simply going out for a few beers, Irish people in destinations all over the globe have various ways of celebrating our national holiday and an Irish ex-pat in New Zealand has come up with a very tasty way of doing so indeed.
Stephen Lynch has been living in New Zealand for a few years and around six months ago, he quit his job as a Quantity Surveyor to make a go at opening up his own restaurant, The Burger Bar, in St. Kevin’s Arcade on Karangahape Road in Auckland.
Every month, Stephen comes up with a ‘monthly special’ burger and this month he’s come up with a whopper just in time for Paddy’s Day known as the ‘Irish burger’.
And, to be fair it couldn’t be more Irish. Just look at the list of ingredients; bacon and cabbage, spuds and black pudding all between the buns.
Colcannon potato mash
Beef patty infused with stout reduction
Irish style sharp cheddar
Crumbled black pudding
Cheese and onion potato disk
Bacon and cabbage salad
Wholegrain mustard sauce
Visitors to The Burger Bar can enjoy that behemoth for $16 (approximately €10.60).
