Over a quarter of Irish adults aged 50+ suffer from both high blood pressure and high cholesterol.
Having high cholesterol means you have too much of a specific fatty substance in your blood.
Two major risk factors associated with this are heart disease and stroke, according to research carried out by Trinity College Dublin.
While being diagnosed with high cholesterol isn’t something you should be alarmed by immediately, if not dealt with properly it can build-up over time and lead to blockages.
In severe cases, it can result in life-threatening emergencies like heart attacks and even strokes.
Diet is one of the major contributing factors to this condition, with certain fatty foods being one of the most common causes.
But there are also foods that are now known to lower it, and help in your overall treatment with getting things back under control.
An expert has since recommended three drinks that are known to help reduce cholesterol.
Speaking to Express.co.uk, Mays Al-Ali , a registered nutritionist and founder of the Healthy Mays clinic advised that people suffering with high count add green tea, yerba mate and hibiscus tea to their diets.
She said: “Green tea and also yerba mate have both been shown to lower the bad low-density lipoprotein cholesterol improving serum lipids.
“But watch out they are both caffeine-rich so only drink in the morning so as not to disrupt sleep.
“Hibiscus tea has also been shown to lower cholesterol – in one study those who drank it daily, lowered triglycerides, low-density lipoprotein and total cholesterol, and increased high-density lipoprotein (the good one) after only one month.”
