Dealing with rosacea can be incredibly tough

Skin conditions like acne and rosacea can ruin your self-confidence and even impact your mental health, but they're often dismissed as cosmetic issues.

Rosacea affects one in 10 people in Ireland but there is sadly no cure for the condition.

However, being aware of what triggers the condition can help manage rosacea.

There are many things that trigger it, the main ones being your diet and stress levels, but one common habit can also make it worse.

We all know smoking can cause multiple health conditions, but it can also have a negative impact on your skin.

According to experts, smoking constricts your blood vessels and then reduces your oxygen supply which leads to inflammation and skin damage.

Nicotine, a component of cigarettes, can trigger vasodilation and inflammation.

Smoking can also weaken your immune system and weaken your skin barrier which makes it more prone to rosacea.

However, some experts believe further studies are needed when it comes to the connection between rosacea and smoking.

Earlier this week, the HSE issued a warning about what triggers.

The most common triggers patients should be aware of include caffeine, hot drinks, alcohol, spicy foods, and cheese.

Aerobic exercise like running can also trigger rosacea.

Rosacea is common but it also has similar symptoms to other conditions like acne, contact dermatitis, lupus, and keratosis pilaris.
