Dr. Joshua Zeichner, assistant professor of dermatology at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City, and Boston dermatologist Dr. Ranella Hirsch told Buzzfeed Life that society norms now means we could actually be damaging our skin with our excessive washing habits.
According to the pair:
“We overbathe in this country and that’s really important to realize.”
So how could this zealous cleaning ritual be affecting our skin?
The pair list frequent showering (specifically in hot water) as potentially drying out skin and causing irritation, washing away good bacteria that exists on the skin, and introducing small cracks that put people at a higher risk of infection.
Instead both doctors recommend showering once every two to three days.
