RTÉ's Smother is the thriller that will be your next TV obsession.

While no release date has been set for the series just yet, filming is currently underway - so we're hoping we'll be seeing it on our telly screens at some point later this year. According to RTÉ, the family thriller - which explores long-buried secrets and their consequences - is set in a "small town on the wild and rugged coast of Clare." Some of the filming locations for the series include Lahinch, Liscannor, Spanish Point, Fanore, Ennistymon and Lisdoonvarna. The Stranger's Dervla Kirwan stars in the series as Val Ahern, whose husband Denis (Stuart Graham) is found dead at the foot of a cliff near her home the morning after a family party. Val is determined to get to the bottom of what happened, while protecting her family - especially her daughters Jenny (Niamh Walsh), Anna (Gemma-Leah Devereux) and Grace (Seána Kerslake) - at any cost. She sets out to find out who may have been behind the brutal death of her husband, picking through the events of the night before and examining Denis' relationships with his kids, step children and siblings. However, the more she digs into the family's secrets, the more she starts to realise how Denis' controlling and manipulative ways had affected each of their family members in their own ways. "It’s been a long time since anything this well written about an Irish family has come my way. In Smother Kate O’Riordan has created a riveting thriller that will wake the world up to contemporary Ireland and rewrite an outdated narrative that has been peddled about the Irish for years," Dervla Kirwan said to RTÉ of the series. "Val is such a complex, layered character and a ferociously protective motherand I’m really excited to be playing her in such a powerful Irish drama. Smother has so much to say about modern families, and it says it in a compelling and gripping way." Smother is written and created by Kate O'Riordan, and commissioned by RTÉ. It is developed by BBC Studios Drama North and Scotland, in partnership with Treasure Entertainment.
