The showrunner also said that DeLuca is going to have a lot to learn in the future, particularly about when he can - and can't - step in to try and help Meredith.
Vernoff continued:
"She already began to [teach him] in her final [Season 15] speech to him, where she told him, ‘Look, if we’re going to be together, you’re gonna have to develop some instinct for self-preservation, and you’re gonna have to trust me to stand in my own truth.’ "That was her teaching him what it is to be with her. And more will be revealed.”
It comes as Katherine Heigl recently spoke about the possibility of returning to Grey's Anatomy.
The actress played Dr. Isobel 'Izzie' Stevens until 2010, when she made her then-final appearance in season 6.
The 40-year-old told Entertainment Tonight:
"I haven't (thought about Izzie) in years. I don't know. I don't know if I would or if I wouldn’t. "I almost just feel like that would be distracting again to what they've done with that show in the ... years since I left, you know, and what that's become and what it is to the fans now. "It would just be kind of like, 'Yeah we already let that go. Why are you here?'"
