It appears that everyone has gone from asking for a blunt cut at the hairdressers to opting for an edgier layered hairstyle.
From the jellyfish haircut to the wolf cut, layers are all the rage right now. However, our favourite take on an effortless layered haircut has got to be the butterfly bob.
Its light and airy layers make it a perfect hairstyle for those sweltering summer months. Though its effortlessness and flattering shape ensure it transitions just as seamlessly into colder months.
We all know a big chop can be scary, and not everyone is ready to make that big of a change. If this sounds like you, a butterfly bob might be your gateway to shorter hair.
This bob is inspired by the longer butterfly haircut, which has been going viral on TikTok in recent years.

The butterfly cut is a layered, voluminous cut designed to give the illusion of shorter hair while still keeping the length; however, the bob version of this haircut brings that same layered volume to a shorter, perhaps more manageable shape.
According to hairstylist Danielle Garner, "The butterfly bob is a layered bob that mimics the soft, wing-like movement of a butterfly," per Cosmopolitan UK.
This translates to a hairstyle that feels light and airy, with layers that create soft and natural movement.
Danielle goes on to explain that the hairstyle "typically includes: shorter, face-framing layers (curtain bangs or a soft fringe), longer, tapered layers through the back to build shape and volume, and a light, wispy finish, avoiding a blunt, heavy edge."
This look avoids the harsh lines of a traditional blunt bob, creating a sculpted silhouette with plenty of texture.
So, long story short, the butterfly bob gives you the drama and volume of a fuller style while still maintaining the clean structure of a classic bob.

When you're thinking of going short, a thought that often crosses our minds is 'will it suit my face shape?'
Hairstylist Danielle claims that "Oval and heart faces work well with the layers to beautifully accentuate cheekbones and jawlines," per Cosmopolitan UK.
For people with rounder faces, she advises longer, tapered face layers, as very short layers can give a widening illusion, while longer layers help elongate and balance the face.
As for those with strong square jawlines, Danielle says they should opt for soft, wispy layers for balance.
Additionally, you shouldn't only be looking at face shape, but also at hair type when deciding whether the butterfly bob will suit you.
According to Danielle, fine to medium hair types are ideal for a butterfly bob as the layers add volume and movement.
For curlier hair types, layering can avoid bulk and boxiness; however, curly hair requires precision layering to keep the shape light without creating even more volume in the wrong places.
Curlier hair types often also require texturising or thinning techniques to avoid a blocky look.
It appears everyone can pull off this trendy look as it just needs slight adaptations depending on your face shape and hair type.
So, this is your sign to take that leap and give that playful bob a try.
